Besides the cards, cake, candles, and gifts, there might be one more unexpected surprise in store for you on your birthday — a higher risk of dying.

A new study suggests that men and women are 14 percent more likely to die on their birthday than any other day of the year.  This effect was strongest in people aged 60 and older, who were up to 18 percent more likely to die on their birthday.

“We find more deaths than expected solely on birthdays, that is neither in the days before nor after the birthdays,” says lead author Dr. Vladeta Ajdacic-Gross, an epidemiologist for the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Zurich.

The Russian opposition politician shot dead in Moscow had spoken of his fear that Vladimir Putin would have him killed weeks before his murder.

Speaking to Russia’s Sobesednik news website on 10 February, Boris Nemtsov said: “I’m afraid Putin will kill me. I believe that he was the one who unleashed the war in the Ukraine. I couldn’t dislike him more.”

Nimoy, who played the legendary character in the original Star Trek television series, died of pulmonary disease after being hospitalized earlier this week.

Leonard Nimoy, who enchanted generations of audiences with his depiction of Star Trek’s human-alien philosopher and first officer Mr Spock, has died at his home in Los Angeles. He was 83.

The actor died on Friday morning of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Bel-Air, his wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, told the New York Times. He had been hospitalised at UCLA medical center with breathing difficulties days earlier.

A King Philip Regional High School senior has been indicted for involuntary manslaughter, allegedly for urging a friend to commit suicide. She then raised money for mental illness in the name of her friend.

Michelle Carter, 18, of Plainville was indicted as a “youthful offender” by a Bristol County grand jury, and was arraigned in New Bedford Juvenile Court.

She is accused of urging Conrad Roy III, 18, of Fairhaven and Mattapoisett to kill himself, which he did while idling a truck last July in the parking lot of a Fairhaven Kmart. Authorities said he died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Justice Department said its independent investigation found “insufficient evidence” to charge George Zimmerman with federal civil right violations in the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin.

Attorney General Eric Holder said the evidence did not meet the “high standard for a federal hate crime prosecution,” but the decision should not end efforts to explore racial tensions in the justice system. The decision closes the federal investigation.

‘American Horror Story’ Actor Ben Woolf Dies

Family, fans and friends are mourning the death of Ben Woolf, an actor from the most recent season of “American Horror Story,” who died on Monday in Los Angeles.

Woolf played the character of Meep, a dwarf who only spoke with one word, on “American Horror Story: Freak Show.”

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that he had been hit by a car’s side mirror in an accident on Thursday night in Hollywood.

A Saudi court sentenced a local man to death after he was found guilty of insulting Islam and its Prophet (PBUH), a newspaper reported on Monday.

The unidentified man, in his 20s, was also charged with ripping a copy of the Holy Koran, filming the act and publishing it on social networks, ‘Sharq’ said.

Americans hate terrorists and love our kids, right? So you might be shocked to know that preschoolers with guns have taken more lives so far this year than the single U.S. terrorist attack, which claimed four lives in Boston.

This is admittedly tongue-in-cheek, but one has to wonder if the NSA’s PRISM program would have saved more lives had it been monitoring toddlers – or gun owners – rather than suspected terrorists.

A Mom who throttled her 10-year-old son to death because she thought his big ears were ruining his life is facing murder charges in Turkey.

Nuray Sacan, 37, had paid for the boy to have cosmetic surgery in Gazi Hospital in the capital Ankara, but when she turned up to see the results she told surgeons she was unhappy with the way it turned out.

So she took the youngster to the women’s toilet in the early hours of the morning and choked him to death with her own scarf.
